Model Highlights
Automakers have long searched for the right ingredients in the race to build a successful alternative-fuel car. For 2013, Fiat has entered the race, with its fully electric 500e. Based on the hugely successful 500, the 500e is every bit the exhilarating car of its gas-powered brother, but in a much more environmentally friendly package. The 500e runs on an 83-kilowatt electric motor that makes 111 horsepower, along with 147 ft-lb of torque. A 97-cell, 24-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery is mounted in the rear and supplies the necessary power. The unit is mated to a single-speed transmission, which is operated by a push-button on the dash. The 500e has a range of 87 miles on a single charge, with an EPA-estimated 108 MPGe. Fiat claims a full recharge through a Level 2, 240-volt charger (sold separately for $999, or installed for $1,999) in under four hours. A Level 1, 120-volt charger comes with the car, plugs into a standard, dedicated 120-volt outlet, and will charge the 500e fully in less than 24 hours. The 500e also benefits from regenerative braking, which harvests kinetic energy generated through coasting and braking, and applies it to the battery. Beyond the unique powertrain, the 500e features a special exterior body treatment, including a slight spoiler and 15-inch alloy wheels, all of which Fiat claims adds to the car's aerodynamic prowess. Just one trim is available, and standard features include fog lamps, power heated mirrors, remote entry, automatic temperature control, power one-touch windows, heated front seats with driver memory, 7-inch TFT display, BLUE&ME hands-free connectivity, Fiat Premium Audio, TomTom navigation and more. Additionally, Fiat offers a smart phone app that allows owners to unlock the doors, find the car in a parking lot, check on battery level and tire pressure, schedule a charge or adjust the climate controls before entry. One options package is available--eSport--which offers black matte aluminum wheels with orange accents, black trimmed lights, and orange mirror caps with side body stripes. Safety has always been a priority in the 500, and the 500e is no exception, offering seven airbags, electronic stability control, and 4-wheel anti-lock braking.
